Creating reverse DNS (PTR) records

Set a reverse DNS (PTR) record for your server IP – essential for running a mail server.

Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a hostname. Mail servers check it, so a correct PTR record helps your email avoid spam folders.

Before you start

Create the forward record first: an A record such as mail.example.com → 203.0.113.10. The PTR must match a hostname that resolves back to the same IP.

Set the PTR

  1. Open your service in the client area and look for Reverse DNS (or rDNS).
  2. Enter the hostname for each IP and save.
  3. If the option is not shown, open a ticket with the IP address and the hostname you want.

Verify

dig -x 203.0.113.10 +short

Updates can take a few hours to appear everywhere.
