What you need
- Your server’s IP address and root password (from the welcome email)
- An SSH client: Terminal on macOS/Linux, or Windows Terminal / PowerShell on Windows 10 and 11
Connect
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
The first time you connect, confirm the server fingerprint by typing yes. Then enter the password.
Use SSH keys instead of passwords
On your computer:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
ssh-copy-id root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
On Windows without ssh-copy-id, paste the contents of ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub into /root/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.
Can’t connect?
- Connection timed out – the server may be off, or a firewall blocks port 22. Use the VNC console to check.
- Permission denied – check the password, or reset the root password.
- Once logged in, see Hardening SSH.
